Argentine tango in Canterbury
Newcomer to tango - or to Canterbury?
Join us in January 2019 for a special Tango Taster and NEW beginners course!

In 2019 we celebrate our 15th year teaching tango in the beautiful city of Canterbury.

On our 10th anniversary in 2014, we took the opportunity to reflect upon our tango philosophy - the principles which guide and inform our teaching and dancing. You can read about that here.

Five years on, we want to acknowledge how our wonderful home city, Canterbury, shapes and inspires our tango.

We established Argentine Tango South East in 2004. For many years, we taught tango in venues across Kent and East Sussex. We ran weekly classes in Rochester, Maidstone, Hastings, and twice weekly in Canterbury. We also taught on dance weekends, ran guest workshops and performed for arts festivals and in local theatres in the South East. And we travelled worldwide to continue studying and developing our tango.

In 2011, we decided to focus solely on our tango school in Canterbury. Though we always enjoy guest teaching elsewhere, we now run all our weekly classes and workshops in Canterbury.

Canterbury is a small city: around 160,000 people live in Canterbury district, a third of whom live in the city itself. It is well-known for its ancient origins and its rich history, but it is also an intellectual and cultural hub in the South East, aided by its universities (Canterbury has the largest proportion of students in the entire UK - roughly 50,000 during term time) and its proximity to Europe.

Most of our regular students live in Kent. But Canterbury is an increasingly vibrant, cosmopolitan city, and the closest city to Europe, so our tango school brings together students with roots and connections much further afield. Our tango classes have welcomed over the years a wonderful mix of people from the UK, Europe (France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Holland, Belgium, Poland, Romania, Norway, and more) and other parts of the world (including the USA, Columbia, China, Hong Kong, Canada, Australia).

We are very lucky to live in a beautiful, lively, open city which draws people from all over the world, and which treasures its history, but also continues to thrive, develop and change. Canterbury echoes our instincts to preserve the essence of authentic Argentine tango, whilst remaining open to innovative advances in techique, style and movement. This is the perfect home for our tango school. If you have not yet joined us, come and see!
