Private tango tuition for individuals and couples
We offer private tuition to students of all levels, in all styles of contemporary tango: salon, nuevo, milonguero and (social) close embrace. We also offer tuition in tango's related dances: vals and milonga.
Individuals and couples are welcome to book private lessons with us, as are small groups (click here for groups).
Whatever your level, private tuition can help you
For beginners...
Nervous absolute beginners sometimes prefer to take a private lesson or two before starting our beginners group class (though there is no need to do so) - and we often give private lessons to newcomers who have been given one of our gift vouchers as a special birthday or anniversary present. We'll help you through the 'basics' but will always adapt the material specifically to you and your needs, goals and capabilities.
For improvers...
We help improvers who are returning to tango after a break, have learned some tango elsewhere, or want to progress towards joining our intermediate class. We teach all styles of contemporary tango, so can help you add variety and excitement to your existing repertoire. You can raise questions or concerns relating to your tango, and we'll help you resolve any problems and build confidence to push forward.
For intermediates or advanced...
If you feel you have reached a plateau and are looking for new challenges, private tuition could be the answer. We can help you gain a fresh perspective; expand your awareness of contemporary technique and variations; improve your personal style, technique and musicality; and deepen your conceptual understanding of the dance.
We constantly update, refresh and reflect upon our tango, and we attend international courses for professionals and teachers with the best tangueros in the world (click here for info); we work, reflect and build on our expanding knowledge of tango and bring that material in appropriate ways to our most advanced students.

Standard rates for private tuition
Individual: £50 per hour plus £10 hall costs
Couple: £70 per hour plus £10 hall costs
This rate of course includes both Jon and Sarah; we always teach together.
As indicated above, if the lesson is held in a studio/hall, there will be an additional fee to cover the hire of that space (variable depending on venue, but we always seek the most economical option; we have a small hall we can usually use for private lessons which costs just £10 an hour).
If these prices are beyond your reach, there is a more economical option: a small-group (private) lesson, which still offers plenty of personal attention and tuition at a rate of just £30 per person per hour (inclusive of hall costs). For info about our these, please click here.
Concessionary rates are offered to long-standing ATSE students who've been studying with us for several years.
We have weekday dance space available to us in Canterbury which is free of charge and incurs no hall costs. It is suitable for a single person or a couple. Sometimes we'll need to book hall/studio space, in which case the rate per hour will increase by the required hall fee (we always try to find the most affordable venue).
Want to save money on private tuition?
Why not put together a small group? We offer private tuition to small groups, usually at just £30 per person per hour (min. 6 people, max. 12).
We currently have a space available for one more small group to meet every few weeks, probably on Saturdays, for a two-hour session. All you need to do is form a group: equal numbers of leaders and followers at approximately the same level. If you don't know enough people to form a group, please just let us know that you are interested. We keep a waiting list of names. As soon as we have enough names to form a good group, we'll contact you all and arrange an initial session. Click here for more information on small-group private lessons.

Booking your private lesson
We teach private lessons daytimes and evenings. There are more slots available during the day. We have less availability in the evenings; we try to prioritise working people for evening slots.
Weekend slots tend to be allocated to our ATSE small-group workshops or to private small groups, as they are usually held in a larger dance space.
