Regular classes & practicas
There are five weekly classes in Canterbury, plus a fortnightly pre-practica class & practica (practice session).
The classes are: one class at each level (beginners, recent beginners, improvers & intermediates); one supplementary, specialist 'technique & style' class for our regular dancers; and a fortnightly pre-practica class which is usually open to all levels. There is also a fortnightly practica (practice session). The pre-practica classes are themed; the themes are announced in our classes and on the page Specialist Classes for Regulars.
Details of each of these regular sessions is given in the table below. Please take note of the information about class levels given underneath the table before turning up to a session.
In addition to all these regular classes, there are many other ongoing special classes, workshops, courses, guest teachers and social events. Details of these are published on the relevant pages under 'News & Special Events' (from the homepage), so do take a look!

Note about class levels
In Canterbury, we currently run classes at four levels: beginners, recent beginners, improvers and intermediates. We are pleased to be able to cater for for everyone from the complete novice to the experienced social dancer who has been dancing tango regularly for several years and dances tango several times a week.
Pre-practica classes are usually designed to suit all levels except for complete beginners; these themed classes are advertised a few weeks in advance on the page 'Specialist Classes for Regulars' (under News & Special Events), so please check the level of the particular session before turning up.
The 'Technique and Style' class is for regular dancers with a minimum of 6 months' regular and continuing attendance at classes. For full details of this new class please click here.
We work hard to maintain the correct standard in each class, and we will advise you when it is appropriate for you to move up from one level into the next. Of course, you are welcome to attend the beginners class at any time: no need to book, just turn up.
For guidance about what the levels mean, and what we cover at each level, please visit the page Class Levels. This page will also answer any questions or worries you may have relating to class levels, your own standard, and your progression. Please note that the levels in Argentine tango do not usually correspond to those used in other dances.
Attending extra classes
You are very welcome to attend ALL classes at or below your level, in as many venues as you like. Our best dancers tend to come to at least 2, 3 or even more classes per week (which is how they got so good!). Attending extra classes at a level that is officially 'lower' than your own is a guaranteed way to accelerate your progress. We are always amending and updating our material, so attending a lower-level class will show you some of the latest moves and technique, as well as remind you of some fundamentals you may have forgotten.
We have a special discounted price to encourage this: if you attend more than one weeknight class a week, the price per weeknight class drops to £6, irrespective of how many you attend or what price the class was to start with. This special price deal for those attending multiple classes in one week will remain the same even when the price of individual classes rises (by £1 per class) from October 6th 2008 ie. it'll still be only £6 per class if you take two or more classes in a week.
Directions to venues
Canterbury College Dance Studio, New Dover Road, Canterbury, CT1 3AJ
Canterbury College is located just outside the city, on New Dover Road. Exit the city on New Dover Road, pass through the traffic lights at the crossroad junction you come to, and the college will be on your left, just after the traffic lights. Park anywhere. The dance studio is in the fitness centre, which is on the left after you have entered the college.
Lower Hardres and Nackingon Village Hall, Street End, Canterbury, CT4 7AL
From Canterbury, take the Old Dover Road out of the city, past the cricket ground and its traffic lights. When you reach the next set of traffic lights, filter right onto the B2068 (to Hythe). Follow the B2068 for approximately 2.25 miles. You will see the Granville Pub on your left hand side; there is a road immediately after it (next to the pub, on the left). Take this road (Street End). About 200 yards up this road, on your left, is the hall.
